ONE TON OF DOMINENCE

The most well-known and observed white buffalo was Big Medicine, born in 1933 at the National Bison Range in Montana. He had blue eyes and a knot of brown hair between his horns, but otherwise his fur was completely white. Big Medicine was usually kept in an exhibition pasture, where he was viewed by thousands of tourists. In 1937 he sired a pink-eyed pure albino calf who was blind, but otherwise healthy, and for a time there was talk of using him to breed more white buffalo, but it was decided that this was not the policy of the refuge. In 1943, when the exhibition pasture was being reseeded, Big Medicine was allowed to roam the range during the rutting season. When placed into the general herd, the 2000-pound bull fought his way to dominence over the entire herd. He maintained his leadership for several years. In fact he so jealously protected his harem that no one could approach him. Thus he confirmed the Native American belief that white buffalo were the natural rulers within the herd.
